Barolo ‘Villero’ Azienda Agricola Ettore Fontana 2009
Azienda Agricola Ettore Fontana, Castiglione Falletto, Piedmont
Owned and run by the charming Livia Fontana, this jewel of an estate has been owned by Livia’s family for 8 generations over 200 years. Her two sons Michele and Lorenzo work alongside her, bringing their own skills, passion and enthusiasm to the team cohesion. Currently there are 9 hectares under vine, mainly Nebbiolo, as well as plantings of Barbera, Dolcetto and Arneis. Most vines are located near the winery in Castiglione Falletto, with more planted in Monteforte d’Alba and Roero.
Single cru vineyards include well-known sites Villero and Bussia. Vines are of mixed ages, some young and many of venerable age dating back to 1938. Attentive cultivation practices, as well as respect for the vines and the wider environment, ensure that the Fontana wines reflect truly their origins and are grown in harmony with nature. The family have been working with the highly regarded winemaking consultant Donato Lanati in order to help them retain their estate’s individuality in the end product. To that end Livia’s wines evoke the true character of their origins in a traditional, yet elegant, refined fashion.
Barolo ‘Villero’: 100% Nebbiolo from 1 hectare of vines in the Villero cru in Castiglione Falletto. Altitude 300-350m with south-west exposure. Handpicked. Rigorous selection. Temperature-controlled fermentation, with frequent délestages and punch downs. Three years in large (15hl) Slavonian oak ‘botte’ (foudres), followed by at least 24 months in bottle prior to release.
Warm and elegant, packed with strawberries, cherries, cranberries, roses, tar, leather and sweet spices. A vibrant acidity balances the firm, fine-grained tannins and full body. A long, lingering wild strawberry-filled finish delights the senses.
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
