Mercurey Rouge 1er Cru ‘Clos l’Évêque’ Domaine De Suremain 2017
Domaine De Suremain, Mercurey (Practicing Organic/Biodynamic methods)
Domaine de Suremain comprises 18 hectares of vines spread across some of Mercurey's finest appellations. The property has been in the same family for seven generations and is currently run by Yves Suremain, his wife Marie-Hélène and their son Loïc. Vineyards are situated on the high-slopes and mid-slopes facing to the south and east, in the heart of the appellation. These holdings include no less than 6 different red Mercurey including five 1 er Crus. They also produce one white Mercurey from the 1 er Cru ‘En Sazenay’. In all vineyard work the family philosophy is to respect nature, following a “lutte raisonnée” approach, adapting their work and treatments to vintage climatic conditions. Harvest is gathered by hand into small crates before being carefully sorted on ‘une table de tri’. Fermentations are carried out in open oak cuves of 50-100hl, cru by cru. Sensitively judged égrappage & pigeage are applied depending on the Cru and the vintage. Wines are then matured in French oak barriques (10-15% new) for 14-18 months.
Clos L'Évêque is the best known of the Premier Cru de Mercurey by its surface area (21ha), but also by the consistency of its quality. This is the most "Côte de Beaune" of the Mercurey with fairly pronounced raspberry flavors and floral aromas (violets).
