Pinotage "Old Bush" The Winery of Good Hope 2020
The Winery of Good Hope, Stellenbosch,
Based about 30 miles east of Cape Town in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa. Here the vines are grown on well drained alluvial soils on hilly terrain with most vineyards lying at an elevation of about 100 metres in a sheltered valley. The vines also benefit from a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry growing seasons that are favourable in the production of high quality wines. Several parcels over two individual vineyard sites are used in the production of this particular Pinot Noir, the first at altitude on the cooler mountain slopes of Elgin, the second on the ocean-facing hilltop of Faure, in the Stellenbosch-Helderberg region. After rigorous hand-sorting in the winery and fermentation of the separate parcels, the wine is aged in open-top 'cuvées'(600 litre oak barrels) producing a clean and mineral Pinot with great minerality and a balanced acidity.
By handling the grapes and the ferment , then focus all of the good aspects of Pinotage’s heritage into the bottle (cherry fruit related to Pinot, spiciness related to Cinsault) and avoid all of those that have so often made Pinotage infamously dreadful. This wine displays a refreshing yet juicy palate with black berries, plums, wild black fruits and a wonderful, natural sucrosité . It has a lithe texture with integrated, supple tannins and some attractive spice on the finish. Incredibly moreish!
Grape: 100% Syrah
