Laibach Vineyards, Simonberg, Stellenbosch
Laibach Vineyards is situated on the slopes of the Simonberg, one of the prime red grape growing regions of South Africa. The estate dates back to 1818 and was originally known as 'Good Success' under the ownership of Dutchman, Daniel Johannes van Ryneveld. Its vast holdings covered most of the valley encircled by the Simonsberg, Kanonkop and Klapmutsberg. However, the estate was later divided into 3 separate holdings, one of which, The Goede Suces' remained in the hands of the du Plessis family from 1895 until 1994 when it was purchased by the Laibach family. The grapes for this particular Pinotage come from seven year-old bush vines. Picking is carried out early in the morning and the juice is pumped into open fermentation tanks where it remains for 7 days before being transferred to French oak barrels to continue fermentation and aging for a further 15 months.
Dark red colour. On the nose lots of fruits with herbs, spice and mulberry aromas evident. The palate is complex with beautiful balance between wood, acid and aromas. A wine that reminds you of a world Class Pinot Noir on steroids. An elegant monster with enough complexity to keep 6 – 10 years.
Grape: 100% Pinotage (Pinotage is a crossing grapes between Pinot Noir and Cinsault)
