Pinot Noir ‘Single Vineyard selection Clayvin” Giesen Family, Marlborough 2013
Giesen Premium Range (The Brothers Selection & Single Vineyard Series), Marlborough
Giesen's first vineyard, established in 1981, was located south of Marlborough in Burnham, an area on the outskirts of Christchurch. The Giesen brothers, Alex, Marcel and Theo, originally from Germany, cultivated the world's southernmost vineyard at the time. In 1993, they moved north to Marlborough, where they purchased and converted a dairy farm into vineyards. The Giesen family now own and manage 13 vineyard sites in Marlborough, mainly the Wairau Valley, planted primarily to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, with organic viticulture playing a significant role in several locations, including Dillon’s Point and Clayvin. Planted in 1993, the north-facing Clayvin Vineyard was Marlborough’s first significant hillside vineyard. The site is organically farmed and high density planted, using the competition between vines to reduce vigour, promoting root structure and delivering highly concentrated fruit. Initially taking a long-term lease, seeing the potential, the Giesen brothers purchased the vineyard outright in 2015. Giesen's 13 vineyard sites are planted primarily to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, but many other varieties are grown, including Syrah, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Merlot. One of the estate’s top wines, Sauvignon Blanc ‘August 1888’, is named after the brothers' grandfather. Unlike the winemaking process for most Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, grapes intended for The August are hand harvested, fermented in barrel with indigenous yeasts and aged on the lees for almost one year before bottling, to create a richer expression of the variety.
There’s a distinct mint/pot pourri edge to the nose with sweet raspberry and cherry fruit. The sweet fruit theme carries over to the palate: lovely raspberry/strawberry jam character with sweet fruit the main theme, and some nutty, bitter notes on the finish. Sweetly fruited and ripe, with 14.5% alcohol.
Grape: 100% Pinot Noir
