Weingut Andreas Tscheppe, Leutschach, Styria
Andreas Tscheppe is one of Austria’s leading producers. His vineyards are in the Styrian region of southern Austria, close to the Slovenian border, on a magnificent terroir surrounded by spectacular mountains.
Since 1991, Andreas has been growing grapes with his father for sale to other estates and major houses. His father practiced integrated farming. But in 2002, Andreas began growing organically in a vineyard he was renting at the time. In 2003, his brother-in-law, who works for a winegrower, gave him the idea of biodynamic viticulture and vinification. So, in 2004, he made his first maceration wines. Until 2016, alongside his natural range, Andreas continued to produce conventional wine to sell in supermarkets and invest in quality vineyards. Since 2016, 100% of his range is natural and biodynamic.
The vineyards are terraced, and the soil is composed of limestone, marl and silt. His wines, made from Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Goldmuskateller grapes, have impressive power and character, fully expressing the region and terroir.
The winery’s electricity is solar-powered, and the water pipes are self-managed, allowing fresh forest air to flow directly into the cellar. The vineyard is surrounded by forests and a wide variety of plants. The butterflies, dragonflies and lizards that feature on the wine labels are all creatures we can find in his vineyards. Andreas’s wines are dense, delicate, and full of minerality.
Fermented and aged in a mixture of 80% used barrel and 20% new the wine spends 18-24 months on its lees. Super complex and layered, this wine isn't in any hurry and though it is very delicious now- another 3-5 years of ageing will will be handsomely rewarded.
Kind of what you want really top end Sancerre to deliver, and then some. Exotically spiced, full fruited and incredibly mineral.
