Anna Martens and Eric Narioo, Mount Etna, Sicily

Anna Martens and Eric Narioo made their first wine together on Mount Etna in 2008. In 2010, the couple purchased their first vineyard of old bush vines of Nerello Mascelese in Contrada Crasà, along with a neighbouring, derelict Etnean palmento and wine cellar.
Today, with a team of locals, they cultivate organically, eight hectares of terraced land, divided into small vineyard plots and olive groves scattered across the north face of the volcano. Grapes are hand harvested in September and October and fermented into a range of natural wines, expressive of their “terroir”. The estate also produces an extra virgin olive oil and rears the rare Sicilian black bee.

Two hectare abandoned property in the Contrada Pirao, at 1000 metres of altitude, above the town of Randazzo, on the northern slope of Mt Etna. Amongst the chestnut trees, broom, wild apple, cherry and walnut trees, there were still some 1,000 100 yr old plus, un-grafted bush vines, dotted along the lower terraces. The purity of the grapes, the freshness of the acidity and the ethereal, fine tannins of the two glass demi-johns made from this vineyard in 2016, something quite special. Eric’s “Garden of Eden”.

Pale crimson in colour, this wine has delicate red-fruit aromas and floral notes. On the palate the fruit is both pure and ethereal. The wine has a distinct crunchy minerality, being both sapid and salty; almost crystalline in character. The tannins are fine and austere.
