Bandol ‘Estagnol’ La Bastide Blanche 2016
La Bastide Blanche, Bandol
Stéphane Bourret and his team have improved La Bastide wines’ quality beyond recognition. Despite the pressure of the many tourists ready to buy almost anything at any price, he has chosen a path of quality and hard work. Most of the estate is now run with bio-dynamic methods and the results are stupefying with most wines awarded great accolades in the national and international wine press.
Made from 30 year old vines planted in La Bastide Blanche’s very best vineyards, Bandol ‘Estagnol’ 2014 is a blend of Mourvèdre and Grenache. Aged in 40hl oak barrels for up to 24 months, ‘Estagnol’ will benefit from 3 or 4 years cellaring. Wild blackberries and brambles aromas are foremost, enhanced by the southern influence of subtle rosemary and thyme characters. There are also more tertiary aromas of leather, tar and game. The palate is structured and refined with a long persistent finish of fruit, graphite and minerality. It is a charmer in development.
