Champagne Larmandier-Bernier, Vertus
Pierre Larmandier’s reputation continues on it’s upwards trajectory and La Maison Larmandier Bernier is now perceived as one of the greatest addresses in Champagne. The ingredients for this success are many and varied; biodynamic viticulture, wonderfully old vines, fantastic locations and aspects for the vines, and a non-intervention approach in the winery to mirror the respect for nature in the vineyards. Nothing out of the ordinary on the face of it, but when all elements are joined together the results are little short of outstanding. This is the perfect expression of the purest Chardonnay.
The new name Latitude was selected since the wine is composed exclusively of Chardonnays originating from the same latitude: the south of Vertus, where Pinot noir was historically planted. This is a generous terroir resulting in a round, rich, charming style, which still retains the characteristic pureness of the estate’s Champagnes. Pierre bielieves the wine possesses "pinot-like" characteristics such as red fruit flavors and bredth on the palate -- despite it being 100% Chardonnay -- which he attributes to this unique terroir. 4 gr/l dosage. Disgorgement: April 2017
The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Latitude 1er Cru is powerful, full-bodied and structured, with a real sense of depth. Smoke, lemon peel, crushed rocks, graphite, menthol, dried pear and chamomile nuances infuse this virile Champagne. Readers looking for a Champagne to drink at the dinner table will adore the Latitude. This is an especially fine edition. Don't miss it. The current release is based on the 2014 vintage, with 40% reserve wines. As always, the Latitude emerges from the southern part of Vertus, an area that has historically been planted with Pinot Noir, which was considered better suited than Chardonnay because of the clay-rich soils.
