Leniac and Samuel Bachey-Legros, Santenay

The Bachey-Legros family has been crafting wines in this region for 6th generations, and their expertise shines through in this elegant and complex white wine.

8 hectares of vineyard on prime sites within Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Les Maranges to name but a few, the highest of qualities of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are expressed. Their philosophy in the vineyard is simple, and revolves principally around the respect of and for the vine, nature itself, and the achievements of the previous generations. In short, this is to let each rootstock live, produce fruit and then die – in the most natural way possible. The old vines must be meticulously cared for and in doing so they produce berries of phenomenal concentration and full of "goût du terroir"... a true expression of the place from whence it came. The fruit is itself small – rich in sugars and highly concentrated. With the reds, the thick skins and mature pips give the wines deep colours and silky tannins.

A brooding Pinot Noir initially, revealing red fruit, spice, and earth with coaxing. The medium-bodied palate shows impressive concentration, firm tannins, and bright acidity. Flavours of red fruit like cherry and raspberry, with hints of earth and spice linger on the persistent finish. Approachable now, but this Santenay has cellaring potential.
